Board Approves 2010 Scholarship Program
Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 9:38PM The Board of Directors has voted to continue the Thomas Carr Howe Alumni Association’s scholarship program for the 2009-2010 academic year.
Outstanding graduating seniors of the Class of 2010 of Thomas Carr Howe Community High School as well as graduates--with a Howe “connection”-- of Marion County high schools are encouraged to apply.
The program last year honored twelve graduating seniors and brought the cumulative total of awards to $80,250 for 125 students. Over the years the scholarship grants have been increased from $500 to $750 and then in 2007 to $1000. (The 400 Club/Alumni scholarships are fixed at $500.)
The number and size of awards are determined each year by the amount of money available in the Association’s Scholarship Fund.
Association awards have been funded by donations from individual alumni, gifts from various graduating classes, memorials in honor of Howe graduates and Howe faculty, a special grant from The Tom Russell Charitable Foundation, a grant from the Hazelbaker Foundation, Association fund raisers, and interest from a Howe 400 Club certificate of deposit left in the care of the Association.
Alumni Association Scholarship: A number of scholarships will be reserved for Howe graduates. Additional scholarships may be reserved for students who are the child, grandchild, or great-grandchild of a Howe graduate and attend a Marion County high school. All scholarship recipients must be scheduled to be graduated in June 2010 with an overall B-average (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) through seven semesters and have been in extra-curricular activities in either school and/or community. (Schools must adjust applicant’s GPA to the 4.0-scale for the application to be considered.)
Howe 400 Club/Alumni Association Scholarship: Awards go to graduates of Howe as specified by the Howe 400 Club. Student must have an overall B-average (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) through seven semesters, been awarded at least one varsity athletic letter, and been involved in school or community activities beyond athletics.
Applications from Howe seniors are available in the school Guidance Office. Applications for other Marion County high school seniors are available from Dan Kaga, ’57, chairperson of the Scholarship Committee, 872-3260, or dkaga49941@aol.com.
There is also a possibility of an award for former scholarship winners who are continuing studies in the post-graduate level. Contact Dan Kaga, whose phone number is above, for additional information
The deadline for receiving scholarship applications is April 1, 2010.
Scholarship winners and their families will be honored at the Association Board of Directors meeting on June 10.
