Scholarship Program Honors Thirteen More Graduates, Pushes Total Awards Past $90,000

The Thomas Carr Howe Alumni Association Board of Directors at its Scholarship Night, June 10, presented awards to twelve graduating seniors and one former scholarship honoree.

Six seniors from Thomas Carr Howe Community High School were awarded $1,000 scholarships; four seniors from Marion County high schools who have a “Howe connection” (parents or grandparents who are graduates of Howe) were awarded $1,000; and two TCHCHS graduates were each awarded $500 Howe 400 Club scholarships.

Dan Kaga, ‟57, Alumni Associa-tion Scholarship Chairperson, and Scholarship Committee members Jean (Morgan) Koelliker, ‟55; and Errol Spears, ‟60; announced the winners and presented the awards to the following 2010 graduates:

The Howe 400 Club Scholarships, each $500, were presented to Howe graduates—

Jordan Dunz, admitted to Prime Time Institute to study nursing.

The Karl Schneider Scholarship, an award of $750 in honor of the Associa-tion‟s first president, for a previous scholarship winner to continue graduate study, goes to Aaron Hadley, Ball State University Honors College. Aa-ron is the son of Joyce (Covert) Had-ley, ‟80.

A reception for the honorees and their families followed the awards pro-gram and provided a chance for winners to smile and their family members to celebrate their offspring‟s scholastic achievements.

Since the first scholarships the Association program, now in its fifteenth year, has made awards totaling $92,000 to 138 students

In 1996 the Association gave two $500 Howe 400 Club scholarships. The next year saw the first scholarship funded by alumni donations. As the Scholarship Fund grew, so did the number and the amount of the awards. The generous grant of The Tom Russell Charitable Foundation enabled the Association to increase scholarships in 2006 to awards of $750; in 2007 the amount was increased again to the pre-sent level of $1,000. The Howe 400 Club is set at $500.

The number and the amount of the awards are determined by the funds available. The Board determines eligi-bility requirements for applicants.
