From Harry Stewart, ’48, Greenville, SC
Friday, July 16, 2010 at 10:40PM --writing to Al-ice Hankins Schmidt, whose letter appeared in the February Howe Now--I just received my February Howe Now and you made mention of Miss Ellen O‟Drain, who was also my English teacher way back in the 1940s. I had not heard that Miss O‟Drain had passed away, but I was glad to know that others appreciated her as much as I did. I think she would have been pleased to know that I graduated from DePauw and received my M.A. and Ph.D. in French, German and Comparative Lit-erature from Indiana University. I also received a “diplome” from the Cite Universitare in Grenoble, France. I have served as head of the Language Department at Kent State University, Tulsa University, and Clemson University. I have published numerous articles and three books (primarily on the works of that not-so-nice French author--Jean Genet.) I am much in-debted to Miss O‟Drain for she inspired me and inculcated in me a thirst for knowledge. I was one of those mid-termers who began attending Howe in January 1944 and, although I actually graduated in December 1947, I “posted” taking enough classes to be eligible to play basketball through the season ending in March 1948. I then went to work driving a truck for the Blue Ribbon Ice Cream Company until it was time to head off to DePauw. I truly believe Miss O‟Drain was the motivating factor that pushed me to become a French pro-fessor. Thank you for your comments about an outstanding teacher.
