PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 1:46AM I’ve served on the Board in various positions since 1997,
when my beloved classmate Phyllis (Money) Brown called me
to ask for my help. Little did I know how involved I would be
in Association activities the next four years. I’ve helped with
the scholarship program (and logged lots of miles when I deliv-
ered scholarship applications each year to all public and private
high schools in the county. That chore now, though, is handled
by putting applications on-line.) I’m a veteran at hawking raffle
tickets at get-togethers. I’ve been to lots of luncheons, and I’ve
promoted the scholarship program to potential contributors.
As an association we’ve worked hard to see the school reo-
pened; we’ve seen the building completely upgraded. We’ve
now seen four senior classes graduated. We’ve seen the birth of
a scholarship program that has helped keep alive the spirit of
Howe. We’ve given financial support to school activities, but
now reduced resources will put our commitment to a real test.
Numbers of supporters and amounts of donations have shown
that our Association is not immune to the effects of a sluggish
economy. We will need to look carefully at our scholarship
program, both at the number and the amounts.
We’ve made our presence felt in the Howe and IPS com-
munity. We’ve rekindled all-alumni activities. (This year we
had the first All-Alumni weekend, which coincided with the
school’s homecoming.) We’ve helped develop websites to tell
the Howe story and help alums to stay connected with their
former classmates. Since 1994 we’ve published a twice-a-year
newsletter which goes to all alumni of record. (The hard copy
of the August issue of Howe Now was sent to all graduates in
the 1941 to 1960 classes; more recent grads had access to the
newsletter on line at thehowenow.com.)
By my count I am the seventh president of the Association.
With your help I pledge to try to do as good job for you as my
predecessors did. And that will be my personal challenge.
